Do you have the Essure® implant and wondering whether you can still be an egg donor? The short answer is: yes! Although the Essure implant is a permanent form of birth control, you can still donate eggs with this device in place. Below, we’ll explain how the implant works and why you can still be an egg donor.
What Is an Essure Implant?
Essure offers women a non-invasive sterilization solution that doesn’t involve surgery or anesthesia. This benefit of this method is that it involves no cutting or visible scars.Essure consists of two soft and flexible metal coils, which the gynecologist places into the patient’s fallopian tubes. The coils will trigger an immune response, causing scar tissue to form around the coils. The scar tissue barrier forms in about three months, which blocks the tubes so that eggs don’t descend from the ovaries into the uterus where they could be fertilized.
The Essure procedure is 99.3 percent effective at preventing pregnancy, as long as the coils stay in place. The sterilization if the coils are removed.
Of note, many Essure users have reported problems such as chronic pain and perforations of the uterus and fallopian tubes. The manufacturer ceased sales at the end of 2018. If you are an Essure user and believe you are experiencing symptoms as a result, you should contact your physician immediately.
Why Can I Donate Eggs With an Essure Implant?
There are three reasons why you can still donate eggs with an Essure implant:For one, your body still produces mature, fertile eggs and you ovulate every month. Assuming your reproduction function and health are normal (which we will test in order to determine your eligibility an egg donor), you’ll have perfectly good eggs for the egg donation.
Secondly, Essure is a non-hormonal form of birth control. This not only keeps your reproduction function normal, but it also won’t interfere with the hormone medications you’d be taking as an egg donor.
Third, the Essure implants won’t interfere with the egg retrieval process. The implants are in your fallopian tubes, while the reproductive endocrinologist will extract your eggs via your ovaries. To learn more about the egg retrieval process, click here.
As you’ve read above, the Essure implant won’t disqualify you from donating eggs. Many of our egg donors have donated after getting the implant.
